How to Start Your Own Preschool or Playgroup in India

Step 1 — Get properly trained first

Running a preschool is not just minding children; it is curriculum planning, child psychology, classroom management, and administration. • A helper's salary: ₹8,000–₹12,000 per month.
• Branding, banner, registration, marketing: ₹15,000–₹40,000.

A modest home-based playgroup can genuinely be started for well under ₹1.5 lakh. With even 10 children paying a typical monthly fee, many small preschools cover their costs within the first year.

Step 4 — Handle registrations and policies

Keep it clean and compliant from day one. Requirements vary by state and municipality, so check your local rules, but generally plan for:

• A business registration (proprietorship or similar) and a local trade licence.
• Basic safety compliance — fire safety, hygiene, a verified pickup system, and ideally CCTV.
• Clear written policies: admission criteria, safety and security, attendance, health and hygiene, discipline (positive, child-friendly), and parent communication.

Step 5 — Plan your curriculum and daily routine

Parents want to see that children are learning joyfully and safely. Build a simple, predictable day: circle time → activity → snack → outdoor play. Plan around weekly themes (Fruits, Animals, My Family) that weave together language, counting, art, and music. Display the children's own work proudly. A warm, organised routine is your best advertisement.

Step 6 — Build your reputation, child by child

In the preschool world, word of mouth is everything. Your first ten happy families will fill your next batch. So invest in:

• Small joyful events — Annual Day, festival celebrations, a fancy-dress day.
